Document Summary
Models of policing and models of crime. Police officers are the only personnel in the justice with the authority to arrest and detain people and to use lethal force while carrying out their legally mandated duties. Carry out tasks within legislative frameworks that define their roles, powers and responsibilities generally set out in provincial legislation and in the federal rcmp act. The police mandate is at its heart contradictory: the police are expected to protect both the public order and individual rights. Police are only 1 component of the criminal justice system. Police work is carried out in diverse environments. Police work takes place in a wide variety of situations and circumstances, many of which may involve personal conflict, crises, and chaos, biohazards, blood and sometimes death. Police work involves more than law enforcement it includes order maintenance, service, crime prevention, conflict mediation and dispute resolution, and public relations.
