CHEM 1301 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6.2: Bond Order, Bond Energy, Covalent Bond
Document Summary
Chapter 6: 6. 2 fundamentals of bonding and bond order. The distance between the nuclei of bonded atoms is called the bond length. Because the actual bond length depends on the other atoms around the cond we often use the average bond length: averaged for similar bonds from many compounds. The order of bond is the number of bonding electron pairs shared by the two atoms in a molecule. The bond order is one when there is only a single bond between a pair of atoms: f2, nh3. The bond order is two when two pairs are shared between two atoms: co2, c2h4. The bond order is three when two atoms are connected by three bonds: c2h2, co. Fractional bond order is possible in species having resonance structures. Bond order= number of shared pairs linking x and y atoms divided by the number of x-y links.
