Diagnosic/exploratory: presence of pathological abnormality colonoscopy, biopsy, laparotomy. Palliaive: alleviate symptoms without cure (cut nerve root to remove pain symptom, remove porion of tumor for beter qol) Construcive/cosmeic: repairing burn scar, breast augmentaion, skin grating. Preventaive: removing both breasts to prevent breast cancer. Elecive: same day admission: admited day of surgery, day surgery get to go home ater, elecive surgery: dr oice, pre-op assessment clinic (pac), then pre-op site on day of surgery. Past health hx condiions that would put pt at risk. Diabetes (npo, blood sugar could go high due to stress, or could drop, delayed healing) Anihypertensives (may cause very low bp in surgery) Allergies (more exposure to latex can cause allergy) Smokers at higher risk for atelectasis, and then pneumonia. Explain tubes/lines, pain control, post-op mobility expectaions, acive exercises, db&c right away take deep breaths, cough, use pillow. Time to arrive, npo, what to bring, meds to take morning of surgery.
