Document Summary

Span is the maximum distance from wing tip to wing tip of an airfoil, wing or stabilizer. o. Consists of aerofoils that control and stabilize the aircraft in flight. Tail section consists of a fixed vertical stabilizer (fin), the rudder, the stabilizer, the elevators and any control devices associated. Instead of fixed stabilizers and a movable elevator some airplanes have a one piece pivoting, horizontal stabilizer known as a stabilator. The airfoils comprising the tail are lighter than the main structure of the airplane and the tail is positioned in such a way that it is directly in the airflow. Stabilizer is an airfoil placed at the rear end of the fuselage to balance the airplane and provide longitudinal stability. (helps plane fly straight) prevents up and down or pitching motion of the nose. Elevators are surfaces hinged on the trailing edge of the stabilizer to give longitudinal control. Used to control the pitching motion of the aircraft.
