The counterfeiting of money has been done since money was first used. The counterfeiting that we frequently hear about today involves counterfeit designer products, which are commonly called knockoffs. Some of the most popular knockoffs are handbags, watches, sportswear, and athletic shoes. These are produced and sold to consumers who do not want to pay designer prices but want to own designer goods even though these goods are illegal. Billions of dollars are lost worldwide every year because of counterfeiting. Therefore, governments, retailers, and manufacturers are attempting to stop the manufacture and sale of imitation products.
