Week one - creating wealth from waste: chapter one. The social task of waste management is to get rid of it. In production & consumption, waste is what is rejected and seen as useless and barren. Today(cid:495)s waste is carried away through dustbins and sewers, burned, dumped in the oceans, or fly-tipped into gutters. In the uk, there are 435 tones of waste per year. By 1990s there were more than 4,077 landfills in britain. Waste disposal is a low technology, labor intensive service. Waste has always been a section for scavengers: rags & scraps are valuable to some industries in the production field. Landfills release a lot of methane (which is a large cause of global warming) Incinerators provide hazards: emissions of acid gasses, mercury, dioxins, and furans. New awareness of old dangers is what(cid:495)s happening. Waste scares are generating new environmental politics.
