53-67, 82-84 (focus on age-associated changes), 174-190, 281-289. Difficult to distinguish which physical decrements result from aging process alone and which are influenced by other factors. Not many cross-cultural studies of physiological changes accompanying age lack of universality also difficult to separate environmental influences, diseases, diet, changes in other systems, physical activity, mental attitude from aging. Growing old is inevitable but rate of aging is highly individual. Degree at which each organ declines also varies w/in individual ability to adapt to changes also varies among individuals depends on physiology, emotional state, social support. Need to learn to differentiate changes associated w/ aging from changes caused by disease. Complicated by chronic illness symptoms; leads to missing opportunity to treat condition. Gives realistic view of aging not everyone is frail. 54-55 for overview of system integumentary system comprised of skin/accessory organs; largest/most visible body system.
