Over half the world does not live in total freedom. Despite predictions that post cold war there would be a surge in democracy it hasn"t happened, the opposite has. Authoritarianism is a term that covers many types of non democratic rule as it is such a diverse category with so many nuances. It is a regime that is controlled by a small group and are not constitutionally responsible to the public. Regime is built around restriction of individual freedom, exact limits depend on gov"t. North korea can be a totalitarian regime. Strong correlation between societies without modern institutions and nondemocratic rule: key is the development of educated, urban middle class that can demand democratic rule. Modernization can lead to instability and weakening of economic strength and authoritarians can promise return to order, take over from democratic regimes. Regime type and poverty do not correlate well, although a country with . Gdp/capita or higher is more prone to democracy.
