PSCI264 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: 527 Organization, Political Action Committee
Document Summary
Candidates running for national of ce have been steadily increasing their spending. 2012 each campaign reached an all time high. Non-pro t organizations often actively work to reduce the amount of spending on campaigns. The rising cost of elections violates the equal in uence notion. Most do not see reducing campaign spending as a priority, but recognize it is a problem. One political party may unfairly give themselves an advantage. In uence of wealthy contributors may produce inequality between the parties/candidates. Usually, donations are split fairly evenly between the two parties. Republicans and democrats spend roughly the same amount on elections and campaigns. A handful of wealthy people/corporations have a degree of control over the political sphere. Campaign nance laws can limit the amount an individual is allowed to donate. The supreme court ruled against these policies stating that they are unconstitutional and now people/groups can donate as much as they would like to a political party.
