Learning Objectives:
-know key terminology of the scientific method and its steps and analyze the use of the term
-understand the concept of scientific literacy
-apply the bio-psychosocial model to behaviour and the steps in critical thinking
The Science of Psychology
-we make inferences about other people based on their social cues
-cyber emotional intelligence: examines the assumptions we make about people
based on their online personalities (recently created to help understand our
technology-based society)
-two unifying qualities of psychology:
1. psychology involves the study of behaviour, which includes perceptions, thoughts
and emotions
2. psychologists use the scientific method in their work
psychology: the scientific study of behaviour, thought, and experience, and how they
can be affected by physical, mental, social and environmental factors
-psychology examines the individual as a product of multiple influences, including
biological, psychological and social factors
The Scientific Method
-a scientist is someone who carefully follows a system of observing, predicting and
testing
scientific method: a way of learning about the world through collecting observations,
developing theories to explain them, and using the theories to make predictions
