Infants and toddlers growth at dramatic spurts of growth. In a 24 hours period, a child can grow about an inch. In the middle of first year, they gain a lot of baby fat which helps the baby maintain a constant temperature. In infancy, girls are slightly short and lighter than boys with a higher ratio of fate to muscle. Ethnic physical differences also occur with asian people being below the north american norm. Cephalocaudal trend: head to tail, during the prenatal period, the head develops more rapidly than the lower part of the body. Proximodistal trend: from near to far it is growth of the center of the body outwards. In infancy, the arms and legs continue to grow somewhat ahead of the hands and feet.
