Fear
Amygdala- within temporal lobe. Made up of nuclei all with different inputs, outputs and functions. Has
three major regions; lateral nucleus, basal nucleus, and central nucleus
Lateral nucleus- received info from neocortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, thalamus, and
hippocampal formation. Sends info to basal
Basal nucleus- send info to ventromedial prefrontal cortex and central
Central nucleus- projects onto hypothalamus, midbrain, pons, and medulla. Damage reduces/destroys
range of emotional behaviours and physiological responses, no longer fear, less stress hormones.

Document Summary

Made up of nuclei all with different inputs, outputs and functions. Has three major regions; lateral nucleus, basal nucleus, and central nucleus. Lateral nucleus- received info from neocortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, thalamus, and hippocampal formation. Basal nucleus- send info to ventromedial prefrontal cortex and central. Central nucleus- projects onto hypothalamus, midbrain, pons, and medulla. Damage reduces/destroys range of emotional behaviours and physiological responses, no longer fear, less stress hormones. Conditioned emotional response- neutral stimulus is pair with bad stimulus. Involves behaviour, autonomic and endocrine components, ie; heart rate, freezing, secretion of stress hormones. Extinction- learns neutral stimulus is causing pain when painful stimulus stops. Ventromedial prefrontal cortex- part of prefrontal cortex, base of anterior frontal lobe, adjacent to midline. If electrocuted by mixer you would drop the mixer. Have some response if you use the mixer again. Threat behaviour- (cid:449)ar(cid:374)i(cid:374)g that predator (cid:373)ay (cid:271)e atta(cid:272)ked if it does(cid:374)"t lea(cid:448)e. way to prote(cid:272)t the(cid:373)sel(cid:448)es.
