Made up of nuclei all with different inputs, outputs and functions. Has three major regions; lateral nucleus, basal nucleus, and central nucleus. Lateral nucleus- received info from neocortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, thalamus, and hippocampal formation. Basal nucleus- send info to ventromedial prefrontal cortex and central. Central nucleus- projects onto hypothalamus, midbrain, pons, and medulla. Damage reduces/destroys range of emotional behaviours and physiological responses, no longer fear, less stress hormones. Conditioned emotional response- neutral stimulus is pair with bad stimulus. Involves behaviour, autonomic and endocrine components, ie; heart rate, freezing, secretion of stress hormones. Extinction- learns neutral stimulus is causing pain when painful stimulus stops. Ventromedial prefrontal cortex- part of prefrontal cortex, base of anterior frontal lobe, adjacent to midline. If electrocuted by mixer you would drop the mixer. Have some response if you use the mixer again.
