Document Summary

Psych 261 - module 4. 3 - plasticity after brain damage. Possible causes include: tumors, infections, exposure to radiation, toxic substances, and degenerative conditions (parkinson"s/alzheimer"s) in young people: most common cause is closed head injury, a sharp blow to the head that does not puncture the brain. Effects: can recover w/in a few days, but repeated ones = recovery is slow and often incomplete. One cause of damage after: rotational forces that drive brain tissue against the inside of the skull. Another cause: blood clots that interrupt blood flow to the brain. More protection: if wear something to prevent rotation and whiplash. Where neurons deprived of blood lose much of their oxygen and glucose supplies. Neurons deprived of blood are flooded with blood and excess oxygen, calcium and other chemicals. Both lead to same problems, including edema: accumulation of fluid which increases pressure on the brain and probability of additional strokes.
