Euro missionaries and religious orders sought to replace aboriginal knowledge/lifestyles (believed it was inferior) In last half of 19th century, gov-supported, church-operated residential schools were created to separate aboriginal children from families and teach them ways of civilized folk. Could not speak own language, see families, subjected to harsh disciplinary measures. Only recently discover abuse; harper apologized in 2008 formally. Industrialization/immigration created need for education system that would educate the masses. Serve public good by providing common moral education. Encouraged to commit new tax monies to compulsory schooling for girls and boys.
