Ahs emphasizes a holistic approach by fostering the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth of the child. Many attribute the success of the program to its focus on aboriginal determination. Aboriginal communities designed the program and continue to control its operation and evaluation. Programs are controlled locally and are based on traditional community beliefs and cultural practices. Ahs illustrates how an approach that uses self determination and participation can succeed, especially for aboriginal peoples.
