We notice some events and fail to recognize others b/c we simple can"t be aware of everything that"s going on around us, no matter how attentive we are. Perception is important b/c how we interpret events influences how we communicate with others. There are 4 steps in the perception process: 1. We are exposed to so much input, the first step is selecting the data. Stimuli that are intense attract our attention: ex. something louder or brighter. Repetitious stimuli also attract attentions: ex. people were frequently exposed become noticeable. Motives also influence what is selected from our environment: ex. if you are late for an appointment, you"ll notice whatever clocks may be around you. Motives determine how we perceive people: ex. people looking for romantic adventures will be aware of attractive potential partners however, in emergency situations important police or medical personnel would be more important and potential partners are overlooked.
