Document Summary

Genome: genetic material of a specified organism, cell, nucleus, organelle, or virus. Its sequence is the order of bases along the dna/ rna. Gene number is not a good predictor of biological complexity. Viruses, bacteria, and archaeons have small, compact genomes. Genomes are measured in numbers of base pairs, and yardsticks of genome size are a thousand base pairs (kb), a million base pairs (mb), and a billion base pairs (gb) The genomes of bacteria and archaeons are information dense, meaning most of the genome ahs a defined function. 90% or more of genomes consist of protein-coding genes. Among eukaryotes, there is no relationship between genome size and organismal complexity. The largest eukaryotic genome exceeds the size of the smallest by a factor of more than 500,000. The disconnect between genome size and organismal complexity is called the c- value paradox. C-value: the amount of dna in a reproductive cell.
