Document Summary

Plato and typological thinking: all species are unchanging and that variaions within species should be ignored because they are unimportant or even misleading. Aristole and the great chain of being: developed scala naturae which is a ladder that says humans are at the top therefore they are the most complex organisms. Species are a ixed type and (2) some species are higher in complexity meaning they are beter than the others. Species start of simple however add more complex characterisics to their morphology. Individuals with certain traits leave more ofspring than others and overime this trait becomes a common characterisic of the species. They also introduced populaion thinking: instead of being unimportant the variaion in the individuals of a populaion is the key to understanding the nature of species. Reasons why the theory of evoluion by natural selecion was revoluionary: It did not support the earlier theory (plato) that species are staic and unchanging.
