Document Summary
Organizational structure = how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, coordinated. Managers must address 6 key elements when designing organization structure: work specialization (division of labour) Benefits efficient (less time-consuming), easier to train employees. Disadvantages boredom, low productivity, high turnover, increased absenteeism: departmentalization. Concern: departments start protecting their own turfs & not getting along. Grouping activities together based on functions performed: e. g. a company separating engineering, accounting, hr into common departments. Major advantage obtaining efficiencies from putting people w/ common skills & orientations together into common units. Tasks departmentalized by the type of product the organization produces: e. g. Procter & gamble groups major products tide, pampers, charmin. Major advantage increased accountability for product performance. Departmentalizing on the basis of geography or territory: e. g. Dividing a sales function regionally w/ departments for bc, atlantic canada, Advantageous if customers are scattered over a large geographical area.
