Conlict: process that begins when one party perceives that another party has negatively afected or is about to negatively afect something that the irst party cares about. Functional vs. dysfunctional conlict: functional conlict: conlict that supports goals of group and improves its performance, dysfunctional conlict: conlict that hinders group performance, criterion that separates the two: group performance, research indings: cognitive and afective conlict. Cognitive conlict: conlict that is task-oriented and related to diferences in perspectives and judgments. Afective conlict: conlict that is emotional and aimed at a person rather than an issue. Sources of conlict: at least one of these conditions is necessary if conlict is to surface, communication. Can be source of conlict through semantic diiculties, misunderstandings, noise in communication channels. Potential for conlict increases when either too little or too much communication occurs. Increase in communication is functional up to point and then it becomes possible to overcommunicate: structure.
