Document Summary

Pragmatics is the study of invisible meaning, or how we recognize what is meant even when it isn"t actually said or written. Speakers (or writers) must be able to depend on a lot of shared assumptions and expectations when they try to communicate. Our interpretation of the meaning is not based solely on words, but on what we think the writer intended to communicate. There are two different kinds of context: physical context: the situation, time or place in which words are used (i. e. the word bank. 2) on a wall of a building is understood as a nancial institution) linguistic context: the set of other words used in the same phrase or sentence, also called co-text. There are some very common words in our language that can"t be interpreted at all if we don"t know the context. Such as here and there, this or that, now or then, yesterday, today or tomorrow, as well as pronouns.
