Document Summary

Linguistics 100: the study of language- chapter 2. When we hear stories about creatures that can talk, we assume that they are fantasy or fiction. Creatures are capable of communicating with other members of their own species. Glossolalia: the production of sounds and syllables in a stream of speech that seems to have no communication purpose; speaking in tongues. All creatures communicate in some way, even if its not through vocalization. Displacement allows us to talk about things and places whose existence we cannot even be sure of (angels, santa claus, heaven, hell) There is no natural connection between a linguistic form and its meaning. The linguistic form has no natural relationship with that hair four legged barking object arbitrariness: a property of language describing the fact that there is no natural connection between a linguistic form and its meaning.
