Document Summary
Linguistics 100: chapter 3 the sounds of language. As mentioned in chapter 1, basic features of the human vocal tract and the intricate muscle interlacing in and around the mouth give humans the ability to produce a wide range of sounds with great speed. However, humans do not produce a random selection of these sounds; only certain sounds are selected on a regular basis as significant for communicative activity. International phonetic alphabet (ipa) is an established analytic framework for the study of speech segments that has been developed and refined for over a hundred years. Phonetics is the general study of the characteristics of speech sounds. Articulatory phonetics is the study of how speech sounds are made, or articulated. Acoustic phonetics deal with the physical properties of speech as sound waves in the air. Auditory phonetics (perceptual phonetics) deals with the perception, via the ear, of speech sounds.
