PSYC 100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Parental Investment, Coolidge Effect, Sex Steroid
Document Summary
Male rats lose interest in sex after testes removed; interest comes back when testosterone comes back. Hypogonadism: low androgen levels; less interest in sex; hormone replacement therapy. High testosterone levels in both sexes related to more sexual activity; sexual activity boosts testosterone levels. Marketed to men, men are more easily stimulated visually. Zillman & bryant (1984): men and women watched up to 6 films per week for 6 weeks develop more liberal attitudes. Zillman & bryant (1988): decreases satisfaction with partner prefer porn to actual sex. Increases aggressive behaviour in general, but so do aggressive films with no sexual content. The sex that makes the smaller investment competes for the sex that makes the larger investment: sperm is cheap, eggs, gestation, lactation all expensive; childbirth is dangerous. Sex that makes the larger investment will be more choosy when selecting partners: females want good genes, females want male investment. Men compete for access to female reproduction; women are choosy.
