Document Summary

Hindsight bias: the tendency to believe after learning an outcome that one can have foreseen it (i-knew-it-all-along phenomenon) Because of both these, just asking people how they feel or how they would feel is misleading. Common sense describes what has happened rather than what will happen. Hindsight bias, overconfidence, and our tendency to perceive patterns in random events often lead us to overestimate our intuition. more scientific approaches will allow researchers to separate reality and illusion. Smart thinking, examines assumptions, appraises source, evaluates and assesses. Critical thinking combined with science rids biases that may arise. Curiosity, skepticism and humility help make modern science possible. Theory: explains behaviours through past observations, organizes observable facts. Operational definition: carefully worded statements that have a defined meaning used in research studies. (ex. Clarifying the phrase human intelligence as what an intelligence test measured) Replication: replicate a study with different people, should show the same results if the hypothesis is true.
