Emotions are a mix of bodily arousal, expressive behaviors and conscious experience. James-lange theory: believed that emotion followed the boldly response. Fear follows shaking of body (arousal before emotion) Cannon-bard theory: bodily responses and emotions occur separately but simultaneously. Stimuli triggers physiological response and subjective experience of emotion. Schachter and singer believed physical reactions and our thoughts together create emotion. Spillover effect: arousal from a soccer match can fuel physical violence such as rioting. Two factors: arousal fuels emotion and cognition channels it. Zajonc: emotional reaction before interpretation of a situation. Ledoux: the low road and the high road path in the brain. One is like a shortcut for faster interpretation (speedy reflexes) Lazarus: our brain processes many emotional responses without conscious thinking: emotions arise when we appraise an event as harmless whether we truly know it is or not. Summary: zajonc and ledoux emphasizes emotional responses are immediate.
