Document Summary
Today, death typically comes in old age, and the death of a child is highly unlikely. Children from ages 3-5 have limited and inaccurate conception of death. Children from ages 5-10 begin to comprehend that death will come to all, is final, means that the deceased is no longer living and breathing, and begins to understand the causes of death. Adolescents 10-16 years have a more sophisticated, complex, and abstract understanding of death. When a child dies, it is incomprehensible and unacceptable, and often times distressing to all. Now, canadians generally do not expect death, except in very advanced old age. An example of a good death is when goodbyes were said, relationships were affirmed, and death was met with dignity and quiet acceptance.
