PSYC 217 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Wilfrid Laurier University, Falsifiability, Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
Learning objectives: describe different sources of ideas, research, including questioning common assumptions, observation, practical problems, theories, and past research. Motivation for scientific research comes from natural curiosity. We wonder why something happens and then try to find the answers to for our questions. After doing several studies, we learnt that people are attracted to those that are similar to themselves. Observation of the world around us: when we observe things around us, we develop intuitions about the world. Some scientists use these intuitions to fuel research: when we set aside time for a project, we often underestimate the time needed for the project. An example of this is ivan pavlov who discovered classical conditioning although that was not what he initially set out to study. Practical problems: applied research is done to address practical problems directly; these problems can also inspire scientists to research project ideas.
