Document Summary

Psychotherapy: the belief that people with psychological problems can learn more adaptive ways of perceiving, evaluating and behaving is the conviction underlying all psychotherapy. Why do people seek therapy: stressful current life circumstances. When people experience sudden and highly stressful situations such as divorce or unemployment. People may feel vulnerable and therefore often more open to treatment: people with long-standing problems. People with long term psychological distress and maladjustment may seek psychological assistance out of dissatisfaction and despair. As therapy proceeds, an individual with a high degree of motivation may generate their persistent patterns of maladaptive behaviour: reluctant clients. Some people enter therapy by a more indirect route. E. g. a person with a substance abuse whose spouse threatens therapy or divorce. Males are more reluctant to seek help than females. Moreover, when men do seek professional help they tend to ask fewer questions than women. Males are less able to recognize and identify feelings of distress or emotional problems.
