Periods of alternating mania and depression is called bipolar disorder. Depression is more common among poor people. Women are at least twice as likely as men. More than half have an episode later in life. Emotional: people feel sad an dejected, lose their sense of humour, get little pleasure, some display anhedonia- no pleasure at all. Motivational: lose desire to do anything, lack of drive and initiative, suicidal thoughts. Behavioural: less active and productive, stay in bed for long. Cognitive: negative views of themselves and everyone, blame themselves for everything bad, very pessimistic, believe that nothing will change. 1: complain that their intellectual ability is low, experiment: depressed people did more poorly on memory, attention and reasoning. Physical: headaches, indigestion, constipation, dizzy spells and general pain, disturbances in appetite and sleep. Must have depressed mood and/or decrease in pleasure. Genetic factors: some people inherit a predisposition to depression. Examined by family pedigree studies (that examine relatives)
