Document Summary
Cultures aren"t homogenous entities with clear cut boundaries. Acculturation: process by which people migrate to and learn a culture that is different from their original (or heritage) culture. Move because of various reasons; closer to family, for fame and fortune, refugees, jobs, study abroad. Can move to differently heritage cultures; urban or rural. Ideally need to conduct longitudinal studies, rarely done. Acquiring new language, learn new interpersonal and social behaviors, new values, member of minority group, adjusting one"s self concept. Longer the immigrants spend in a new culture more similar their emotional experiences become to people in that culture. More people adapt to a new culture more they acquire the host culture"s norms for relating to others. People move to many different kinds of context; cultural ghettos, homogenous neighborhoods, expartriate communities or cultures which actively discriminate against them. Cultures vary in their similiarity to people"s heritage culture. People have different personalities, goals and expectations that affect their acculturation.
