Homophily - tendency to associate disproportionately with people who are like them - genetics play an effect too but some result in social influences. Social influence affects what we do and say and how we present ourselves to others. Social influence, the many ways people affect one another including changes in behaviour, attitudes, beliefs, feelings and behaviour resulting from the comments, actions or even the mere presence of others. Conformity: changing one"s behaviour or beliefs in response to explicit or implicit pressure (real or imagined) pressure from others. Implicit - decide to wear tighter jeans because others are. Explicit - peer encourages others to smoke too. Compliance: responding favorably to an explicit request by another person. Comes from people with some power over you like boss or professor, or even peers or classmates to borrow notes. Obedience: unequal power relationship, submitting to the demands of the person in authority.
