Self-efficacy: beliefs in one"s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to produce given attainments. 4 fundamental elements effective in developing self-efficacy: successful performance: in order for self-efficacy to be developed, the athlete must experience success. E. g. coach reducing difficulty of task: vicarious experience: beginning athletes can experience success through the use of observational learning and participatory modeling. Observational learning: when a learner requires a template or model to copy. Participatory modeling: when the learner first observes a model perform a task. Effectiveness is influenced by age and skill level for the athlete: verbal persuasion: comes in the form of encouragement from the coach, parents or peers. Coaching criticism should not be conveyed in a negative way: emotional arousal: athlete must be emotionally ready and optimally aroused in order to be attentive. Self-efficacy beliefs are influenced by perceived outcome.
