Document Summary

After you complete this chapter you should understand; The origin and nature of crude oil, and its long carbon chain structure. How crude oil is extracted from the ground, and from under the sea. The principles of distillation, with dirty water as an example. How crude oil is distilled continuously, and how the trays in it work. Cracking (thermal, steam and catalytic), and some of the products. Chemicals from naphtha: ethylene, propylene and butadiene. Zeolite catalysts and the production of p-xylene. Oil originates from animal and plant matter that was washed into the sea several million years ago. Their dead remains were subjected to high pressure by the weight of sand and silt that deposited over them; and the high temperatures that were generated as they decayed. The result was a complex mixture of organic compounds, some gaseous (natural gas), the rest a gooey liquid that we call crude oil.
