BIOL 1020U Chapter Notes - Chapter 45: Circadian Clock, Magnetotaxis, Lightdark
Document Summary
Orientation, navigation, and biological clocks s. 4 p45-11 to 45-13. Mechanically, learning is the change in strength of connections between neurons. Taxes/taxis- movements in a specific direction in response to stimuli: magnetotaxis- response to magnetic field. Circadian clock- daily rhythms in animals- feeding, sleeping, hormone production dependent on light-dark cycles. Clocks related to seasons, day length= photoperiod, good indicator of time in the year: determines times of many behaviours migration, development reproduction. Behaviors are shaped by environmental cues, interactions with other individuals. Learning depends on communication between teacher and student. Communication is the transfer of information from sender and receiver: sender sends signals that elicits response from receiver. Ritualization- increases conspicuousness of behavior: reduces amount of variation in the behavior to be immediately recognized, increase separation from original function advertisement displays- behaviors that individuals draw attention to their status (territorial, sexual)
