On typical day, more than one million people are unemployed. During recession this number rises and during expansion it falls. Loss of jobs bring in a loss of income and lost production. Devastating for the people who bear then and they make unemployment frightening prospect. Unemployment benefits create a safety net, but they don"t fully replace lost earnings. Prolonged unemployment permanently damages a person"s job prospects by destroying human capital, which lowers the living standard in both the present and the future. Statistics canada conducts a labour force survey in which it ask 54,000 thousand households a series of questions about the age and job market status of the members of each household. The population divides into two broad groups: working age population and others who are too young to work or who live in institutions and are unable to work. Working age population is the total number of people aged 15 years and over.
