ANP 1105 Chapter Notes - Chapter CNS: Medulla Oblongata, Ventricular System, Grey Matter
Document Summary
A long extension from a single neuron is called an axon or nerve fiber. The term nerve refers to a group of many axons that are travelling together to and from the same general location in the pns. A group of axons travelling together in the cns is called a pathway, a tract, or when it links the right and left halves of the cns, a commisure. There are 2 general types of pathways in the cns: long neural pathways. Consist of neurons with relatively long axons that carry information directly between the brain and spinal cord or between large regions of the brain. Transmit signals with relatively less alteration (compared to multisynaptic pathways which are involved in processing: multisynaptic pathways. Include many neurons with branching axons and many synaptic connections. Neuron cell bodies in the pns are called ganglia. Neuron cell bodies in the cns are called nuclei.
