ANP 1105 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Chondrocyte, Elastin, Loose Connective Tissue
Document Summary
Tissue samples and fixed, stained and sliced for microscopy. Connective (bones, tendons, fat and soft padding tissues) Epithelial tissues covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands. Epithelial tissue is a sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity. Glandular epithelium fashions the glands of the body, and lining epithelium forms the outer layer of the skin. The functions of epithelial tissue are: protection, absorption, filtration, excretion, secretion. All epithelia have an apical surface and a basal surface that differ in structure and function. Microvilli can be found on the apical surface and increase the surface area of the membrane to help with absorption. Cilia (tiny hair-like projections) propel substances along their free surface. Basal lamina is s a thin supporting sheet adjacent to the basal surface of the epithelium (an adhesive sheet of glycoproteins excreted by the epithelial cells that acts as a protective barrier)
