Integumentary system = system formed by such organs as the skin and its derivaive (sweat and oil glands, hairs, and nails) Composed of: epidermis: composed of epithelial cells; outermost protecive shield, dermis: underlying; making up bulk of skin; tough/leathery of ibrous ct; vascularized (supplies epidermis w/ nutrients via difusion) Hypodermis = subcutaneous issue just deep to the skin; not part of the skin but shares some funcions. Epidermis = kerainized straiied squamous epithelium; 4 cell types + 4/5 layers. Melanocytes = spider-shaped epithelial cells that synthesize melanin (= pigment: found in deepest epidermis layers, melanin accumulates in membrane-bound granules called melanosomes. Dendriic/langerhans cells = star-shaped; arise from bone marrow: ingests foreign substs, acivators in immune system. Tacile/merkel cells = at epidermal-dermal juncion: associated w/ a sensory nerve ending. Thick skin = covers areas of abrasion (ex. palms/ingerips/soles of feet); 5 layers. Think skin absence of stratum lucidum, and generally thinner strata.
