Along with bones, the skeleton contains resilient carilages. Skel is iniially made of carilage/ibrous membranes; soon replaced by bone. Cart that remains are found where lexible skel issue is needed. Skeletal carilage = made of some carilage issues molded to it dif locaions. Carilage: mostly water (giving resilience/ability to spring back to original shape: no nerves/blood vessels, surrounded by layer of dense irregular ct (= perichondrium) Girdle that resists outward expansion when cart is compressed. Has blood vessels for nutrient difusion for cart cells inwards. Limits carilage thickness: 3 types of carilage issue (skel cart has all 3): (figure 6. 1, pg 175) Hyaline, elasic, ibrocarilage: same basic components across cart issue types: Chondrocytes: cells encased in small caviies (lacunae) Hyaline carilages = provide support w/ lexibility/resilience. Include: (aricular, costal, respiratory [ex. larynx], nasal) carilages. Elasic carilages = similar to hyaline; contain ++elasic ibers. Found only in 2 skel locaions: external ear + epiglois.
