Document Summary

Anthropology is the study of humankind in all times and places. Anthropologist seek to produce reliable knowledge about people and their behavior, about what makes them different and what they all share in common. Biological anthropologists trace the evolutionary development of humans as biological organisms and investigate biological variations within the species. Archaeologists seek to explain human behavior by studying material culture. Linguistic anthropologists study the way language is used as a resource for developing culture. Sociocultural anthropologists are concerned with contemporary human cultures as they have been observed, experienced and discussed with the people whose culture they seek to understand. Until recently, people have been restricted in their geographical horizons. Without the means to travel to distant places, observation of distant cultures was difference, if not impossible. A significant contributor to the slow growth of anthropology was the failure of europeans to recognize that beneath all the differences, they shared a basic humanity with people everywhere.
