#10­ Images of Abusers: Stranger­Danger, The Media, and the social currency of  Everyday Knowledge. It is impossible to identify a pedophile on sight, the abuser could be anyone, including a  respected member of the community; The media tends to display sex offenders as being much different than other men. & often  present that they are easily identifiable misfits. ­ Sex offenders are ofter personified as devilish, bestial or sub­human. o For every ONE headline using the term “man” for someone who has  sexually assaulted or abused a child, Ex: ‘Man sought over sexual assault’  >>> o There are THREE headlines describing them as a ‘fiend,’ pervert,  monster, animal.  Often followed by disturbing mugshots of these ‘beasts’  with ca[tions of headlines pointing to their distinctive appearance. When a man assaults a girl, it is rarely identified as heterosexual assault. But when a man  attacks a boy, it is OFTEN identified as ‘homosexual’  The Danger that Prowls our streets Most news reports focus on attacks by strangers, as to most articles on “how to protect  children,” however sexual violence against children is often perpetrated by someone they  know. ­ Most journals don’t want to publish stories like that because “it’s not a fun  subject, its likely
