This is still evident from the extent to which prison health research remains focused primarily on physical and psychiatric morbidity and mortality. Who"s health in prisons project (hipp) - launched within the european union in 1994 to promote and oversee health development within prisons has yet to make significant inroads into key determinants of health in prisons. Indeed, who"s recent moscow declaration on advancing prison public health was focused firmly on prevention prinipally of infectious and communicable diseases with no explicit mention of broader social, environmental, economic and political determinants of health. Who"s philosophy is drawn from the who"s healthy setting approach where it was envisaged that settings of everyday life should be reoriented to provide opportunities for supporting and enhancing health. Socioeconomic background, childhood experiences, stressful life events, adverse experiences in prison, and experiences of victimisation inside and outside prison have also been directly linked to physical and mental health problems.
