ENG 1131 Chapter 3: Impact Chapter 2 and 3 Notes
Document Summary
Considering the reason and the desired result. Remember the difference between the dictionary meaning of a word (denotation) and the associative meanings or range of suggestions it calls up (connotations) Some words may have the same meanings but have positive or negative connotations to them. Ex: economical and cost-effective is grouped with efficient, cheap, profitable, frugal and prudent but they all have different connotations. A lot of the simpler words in english are the oldest while the most sophisticated/elegant sounding ones from latin or french. In business, writing choose french-based words or expression for a particular effect but avoid them if you don"t want to seem phony. Avoid words derived by latin like the ones with attached prefixes (such as pro, anti, sub, pre) or suffixes (such as tion, ate, ent, ite ) since it causes the writing to become dense and difficult to understand.
