Wasn"t just a project, it was a place where connected sets got projected. Saw a lot of the country thanks to the interstate highways but didn"t get out of the car. This road shaped every aspect of american life (fast food, right of passage, built communities etc. ) 40 years of building the interstate highway system. The good roads movement in 1890s at around the same time as the first car. 1912 carl grand fischer proposed automobile suppliers to create a road from nyc to san francisco to attract more cars called the lincoln. Wwi stopped the progress on the lincoln highway. 1922 the bureau added 10,000 miles to the highway. Mcdonald tested concrete, asphalt and rock to make the best roads possible. After 1929 there was no turning back, people wanted cars. During great depression, people were being employed by the government to make roads. Mcdonald thought the government should make free roads not toll roads as roosevelt felt.
