Nonverbal communication refers to message components other than words that generate meaning. 60-70% of the meaning we generate when communicating may be conveyed through nonverbal behaviours. Nonverbal communication is multidimensional and includes physical ap- pearance, body movement, facial expressions, touch, vocal characteristics, vocal tone, etc. Create an impression: physical appearance, clothing, posture, and facial expression. Identify and express emotions: vocal intensity, facial expression, and body movement. Establish power and influence: take up more space, touch others, and powerful voice. Interpret verbal messages: metamessage (message about a message) using clues. Deceiving others and detecting deception: false facial expressions, awkward gestures. Leakage cues are unintentional nonverbal behaviours that may reveal deceptive communication (lies) Displays of nervousness: more blinking, vocal tension, fid- gety. Signs of negative emotions: reduced eye contact, agitated. Incompetent communication: more speech errors, hesita- tions: linking verbal and nonverbal communication.
