It is possible to have a disability and be in excellent health. Based primarily on function rather than on underlying condition or diagnosis. Serious disabilities compromise an individuals health (increasing illness) Serious illness may begin to impair abilities in major life functions, therefore compromised health begets disability. Three disability identity groups: the functional limitations group: those with signi cant impairments in one or more major life functions (ie. handicapped) but who do not consider themselves persons with disabilities or members of a disability community. Majority of persons with disabilities fall into this group. Identify more with non disabled than with the disabled (severe vs. non-severe: the disability identity group: people for whom the disability is incorporated into the overall self-concept (ie. attribute) Women are more likely to have a disability than men. Disability rates have escalated more in the minority populations: disability, education, income, occupation, and geography.
