Slow onset, autoimmune; insulin defiance from failing langerhans cells; not insulin resistance. 35 yo +; treatment: exercise & diet, insulin if needed; slowly progress to type 1 dm. Shares genetic features w/ both type 1 (hla, ins, vntr, ptpn22) & type 2 (tcf7l2) diabetes.
