POL 1102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: World Politics, Security Dilemma, Humanitarian Intervention
Document Summary
Realists favour pragmatism over idealism, which they portray as self-indulgent and irresponsible. Feminists favour analyzing gender relations in the context of all levels of international relations. The latter requirement is realist in its emphasis on pragmatism but is nonetheless open to interpretation. There is a huge and expanding literature on the ethics of interventions intended to create peace (peace enforcement) or to protect human rights/welfare (humanitarian intervention) There are two debates fueling this: importance of sovereignty and moral imperative to protect life, reduce suffering, prevent harm, and promote well-being, questionable efficacy of such interventions, and whether they do more harm or good. Realists see trade and development as opportunities to be seized so as to glean relative advantages and enhance a state"s power. Liberals, in contrast, see trade and development as natural processes that, even as each individual or state seeks gains, generate benefits across the board for everyone involved.
