Document Summary

Motivation is a need or desire that energizes and directs behaviour. They arise from interplay between nature and nurture. Nature is the bodily push / instinct. Nurture is the pulls from out thought processes and cultures. There are four perspectives for viewing motivational behaviours: instinct / evolutionary perspective. Instinct is a complex behaviour that is rigidly patterned throughout a species and is unlearned. Rather than explaining really just names behaviour. To qualify as an instinct must be unlearned and a xed pattern throughout the species: drives and incentives. The drive reduction theory replaced the instinct theory. It states that the idea that a physiological need creates an aroused tension states (a drive) that motivates the organism to satisfy a need. The aim of drive reduction is homeostasis. Homeostasis is a tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal states. Can be the regulation of any aspect of body chemistry, such as blood glucose. Need -> drive -> drive reducing behaviour.
